Spider-Man Party

spiderman the movieFor over forty years, Spider-Man has captivated an audience of comic, cartoon, and movie lovers alike. This always has been and always will be a popular party amongst little boys- just as princess parties are popular with the little ladies!  Read further and find out some practical tips on how to spin a web that captures the imagination of all who attend your party.

Planning

It’s best to begin planning for the party at least 4 – 5 weeks in advance. This will ensure that you have enough time to send out invitations and purchase or make the decorations.

The first consideration that often comes up when planning a birthday party is where to have it. Your backyard or even inside of your home can be magically transformed into whatever you want with just a few choice decorations.

If you plan on making the decorations or invitations yourself, be sure to allow enough time to gather materials and complete the crafts. For those of us on a more pressing time schedule, there are companies that offer everything from pre-assembled Spider-Man Party birthday kits to plates, cups, trinkets and party favors—just be mindful of the shipping dates/times.

Tips

  • If you know your child may want a Spider-Man themed party, keep an eye out for after-Halloween sales. Many of the same decorations can be used for a web-slinger party.
  • Consider renting rarely used items such as tables/chairs or karaoke machines from party rental supply stores to save money.
  • Allow for extra guests by having a little extra food or a few extra goodie bags on hand.
  • Encourage guests to come as their favorite superhero character.
  • Don’t forget to send thank you notes to all those who attend.

Invitations

You want your guests to anticipate their superhero adventure long before the party’s date has arrived. Make sure to mail the invitations 3-4 weeks prior to the event to guarantee they arrive in time so people can plan accordingly.

For these invitations, think—superheroes and “Spidey sense”.  Word the invitations as if you’re writing a comic. Use high action words and hint at fighting crime!

Here are some invitation ideas:

  • Cut web-shaped invitations out and write the party information in the concentric rings of the web. Black construction paper with white gel pen works well for this. Include small plastic spiders and a little faux spider webbing in the envelope to set the tone.
  • If time doesn’t permit you to make your own invitations, don’t feel bad. There are plenty of Spider-Man invitations available online for you to choose from.

Spider-Man Party Decorations

Spider-Man decorations can come from old comic books, cartoon or movie influences.  Many of the decorations can be made by hand with little effort, or purchased online.  A few key and strategically placed items can make a world of difference.  Also bear in mind that old Halloween decorations make great additions to this party’s theme.

Here are a few decorating ideas to get you started:

  • The color scheme for this party should focus around red and blue streamers and balloons. Try mixing several solid colored balloons with a Spider-Man Mylar balloon. Streamers, plates and all other decorations should remain true to the color scheme.
  • A red and blue birthday banner adds a festive touch to any party. Birthday banners are easy to make, but if you’re pressed for time, spin a web around your little web slinger and try getting a personalized birthday party banner.
  • Tables can be strewn with plastic spiders, fake webs and covered red or blue tablecloths.
  • Spiderman wall decorations make your walls come alive with a clinging web slinger named Spidey.

•    Drape fake webs with little entangled spiders to set the tone for the party.

Foods

It’s easy to get imaginative with Spider-Man themed party foods. Name dishes after heroes or villains and if you aren’t so inclined to do the food preparation yourself, by all means have it catered or even make it a potluck. When filling out the invitations encourage guests to come up with Spider-Man or superhero inspired main dishes, salads and beverages.

If you want to come up with some small snacks or ideas on your own in addition to standard party food, here is some food for thought!

  • What do superheroes eat—why Superhero Sandwiches of course! Make these sandwiches like any other hero or submarine sandwich and cut them into smaller sections for small hands to handle.
  • Rent a cotton candy machine from a party supply store and make web-like cotton candy.
  • Bake your own sticky cake in this Spider-Man cake pan. You can also make cupcakes decorated with cobwebs or gummy bugs.
  • Place dishes with gummy bugs and worms or spiders onto tables for guests to enjoy.
  • Peter Parker’s Pepperoni Pizza- try saying that 3 times fast! These little pizzas can be assembled by the kids themselves using a variety of crusts such as fresh or refrigerated dough, English muffins, and even pita bread. Experiment with different toppings—the kids will have a blast.
  • Freeze gummy spiders in ice cube trays and place them into your favorite party punch for a creative twist.

Game/Activity Ideas:

Silly Putty Comic Relief
Have children bring comic books or you can supply them. Take silly putty and let the children have fun pressing the putty against the print and lifting it off. Children can also make their own comic or flip books as a craft project.

Super Hero Masks
When the children arrive, direct them to a table where they can build superhero masks from various craft materials. The masks can be simple or ornate, but bear in mind that this project can run over in time, so keep the choice of materials fairly simple.

Spider Hunt
Try having a spider scavenger hunt. Leave various plastic or rubber spiders of differing sizes hidden all over the party space. You can either have the children hunt for them like Easter eggs, or supply them with clues and divide them into teams. Different sized spiders can be worth different prizes. The team with the most spiders or the most points wins.

Sticky Spider
This game is a variation on “hot potato”. Children stand in a circle and a spider is passed while music plays. When the music stops, whomever is left holding the spider is “out”.

Movie Viewing
Watch old Spider-Man cartoons or rent one of the movies if the children aren’t too young.

Don’t forget the piñata. Few parties are complete without one and what better choice than a Spider-Man piñata? Children are typically lined up shortest to tallest and require adult supervision throughout this activity.

Favors/Goodie Bags

Spidey fans will appreciate party favors that are spider or Spider-Man related. Trinkets like Spider-Man masks, temporary tattoos, bug candies and pencils or erasers make the perfect treats for party pooped web slingers.

Have fun!
