American Idol is the hottest show on television these days. Girls ages 10-16 in particular are the biggest audience. If you are looking for a fun, new birthday theme an American Idol party is sure to be winner.
It is always best to give your self plenty of time for preparation. If you have the time start your preparation and planning at least 4-5 weeks ahead of time. This will give you the time you need to get your supplies delivered, your food ordered, invitations designed and sent out. If you don’t have that much time, don’t panic—you can still pull off a memorable American Idol Party.

This is a company we have used with great success, many times. In fact we have ordered birthday supplies from other companies over the years and it has been hit and miss. Invitations
It is always a good idea to send party invitations out 2-3 weeks before the party.
An idea for an invitation would be one that reads like a casting call:

Are you the next American Idol? Come to (your child’s name) house to sing and find out. We will have food, prizes, and lots of fun. Oh and we will be celebrating (your child’s name) birthday too!

If you want you can invite the guests to come dressed as if they were auditioning for the popular singing show.
American Idol Birthday Party Decorations
Probably the easiest idea would be to order these directly from our favorite Birthday Suppply Company. They have all the licensed logo products so their American Idol party supplies will look just like they came from the TV show.
If you want to do the decorations on your own here are ideas.
Be sure to keep in mind the American Idol colors blue and silver. You will want to have a stage area and a place or the judges to sit. You can hang a white sheet or use white butcher paper for the back drop of the stage and paint American Idol on it. Opposite the stage set up a table where the judges can sit. Hang stars and balloons all over. Put streamers all around the party room. Use star confetti for the tables. If you have lights you can aim on the stage that will add to the effect.
You will need to get a karaoke machine of some time, if you don’t already have one. If you are not interested in purchasing one, they can be rented. You can also lay out a red carpet or again use butcher paper or a cut sheet painted red to be used as they guests come in.
Game Ideas
For this party the game will really be the singing contest. The idea is to make it as fun as possible and have a prize for every contestant. No real "best" winner—but winners of other categories like: funniest, loudest, craziest costume, best moves, wildest hair.….. You can have a certificate ready to go and based on what comes to mind as they are singing just fill in the name for the category the category they won and the party guest’s name.
Allow them to sing in groups or lip sync if too shy.
Make sure you have older kids or parents as the judges and make sure all the comments are kept positive—No Simon!
If you want someone can video tape the contestants and then play it back for everyone later.
When the guests arrive they can be handed toy microphones, jewelry, perhaps be given a make over…you can be real creative here.
